The Malaysian education system is facing some major changes as the education minister just announced that they intend to abolish examinations for students in Standard 1, 2 and 3.

According to Siakap Keli, Dr Maszlee Malik announced on Twitter that examinations for the aforementioned primary school students will be eradicated and replaced with objective assessments in 2019.

Peperiksaan bagi murid Tahap 1 (tahun 1, 2 dan 3) akan dimansuhkan dan akan digantikan dengan pentaksiran yang lebih objektif bermula 2019.

After posting his announcement, it quickly garnered the attention of fellow netizens who were on-board with the implementation. They felt that this was a great initiative because these young students shouldn’t be burdened by examinations; instead, they should focus on shaping their personality to be good-mannered adults.

Langkah positif ke arah menghilangkan beban peperiksaan.. Namun, harap penilaian objektif yg bakal dilaksanakan jangan menjadi beban pula kepada para guru yg menghadapi masalah peningkatan “paper work” seperti di Tingkatan 1,2,3 ke arah PT3.

Sounds good! Please incorporate creativity in their learning as well. Also for learning science, focus shouldn’t be on the scientific terms yet. Have the kids go out and enjoy nature as part of learning science. But pls keep the Dual Language Program (DLP). All the best!

On the other hand, one netizen hopes that the objective assessment would not burden the teachers like the PT3 burdened them.

As of now, details pertaining to the abolition of examinations for standard 1, 2 and 3 students have yet to be revealed.

It looks like the education ministry has been taking some notes from the Finland education system, which doesn’t focus on exams and homework but, instead, places importance on the intellectual and personal growth of their students.
