Watch out, smokers! Starting Jan 1 next year, the entire precinct of Orchard Road will be smoke-free except for the 40 Designated Smoking Areas (DSA). The National Environment Agency (NEA) will be ramping up publicity for the No Smoking Zone in the coming weeks through advertisements, signs and other efforts to keep both locals and tourists informed. We are talking ads at places like MRT stations and bus stops, signages erected at lamp posts and bins, brochures at shopping malls and stores.
Singapore Tourism Board also incorporated information on its website about the No Smoking Zone, which is bordered by Tanglin Mall to the west, Dhoby Ghaut MRT station to the east and Goodwood Park Hotel to the North. For inbound travellers, they will be alerted through publicity materials displayed at various entry points such as Changi Airport, Marina Bay Cruise Centre, travel agents and hotels.

“Those caught smoking in other public areas within the No Smoking Zone will receive verbal warnings. However, smokers who repeatedly flout the law in spite of prior warnings may also be issued a fine,” stated the NEA.
But to make sure that everyone gets the message NEA will take advisory approach for the first three months of 2019. Then, from April 1 onwards, anyone caught smoking outside designated smoking areas will be issued a ticket, with fines going up to $1,000. As of last Thursday, 40 DSA have been set up in the district.
