Fighting the Rapid Dynamics of Modern Society

A conversation took place about the effect of the ever-changing environment of modern society that people start losing themselves or choosing the habit of excitement that they become inconsistent with what they really want to achieve. This notion seemed problematic to a point we began to start walking on egg-shells due to its unpredictability. What is really the problem?.

Know Thyself, an Ancient Greek aphorism and soon advocated by Socrates has evolved into the current self-reflection or self-awareness. But amid the rapid dynamics of modern society, taking the time to reflect and becoming self-aware of it seemed to be an understatement. According to research, results showed that 95% of people believed that they are self-aware but only about 10-15% really are. Research says that when we see ourselves clearly and know ourselves enough, we can make sound decisions, build strong relationships and less likely to make petty mistakes like lying, cheating or even stealing. So as much as we say we are, it seems like we don’t really put them to practice.

This is something that many of us should look at. After all, we don’t want to start walking on egg-shells. Let’s curb the excitement a little while and reflect on these important points on self-awareness.

1. We all know ourselves the most and only we can make that room to develop self-awareness.

It’s about time we take that responsibility for our own actions and don’t be afraid to acknowledge the mistakes or failures we had, as long as we can make room to learn and develop from it.

2. The feeling of self-awareness should be enlightening.

This does not mean that you have to constantly dig yourself. Take the time to breathe and think. As you grow self-aware, you are more enlightened by the simplest things such as how you can consciously choose your actions and behaviours and achieve something good out of it.

Simply for example,  when you purchase things for a purpose.

3. Don’t worry, this process won’t change who you are. Instead, it’ll be worth it.

This process should make you grow, become more present, curious, accepting and adaptive to difficult situations. Failures are inevitable, it may happen, but believe there’s always a light at the end of the dark tunnel.

4. It should make you realise the harsh truth.

Being realistic can be tough and harsh at times. We tend to deny them and let it sink in. Giving the snowball effect, it can burst as it gets bigger. Instead, you have to be motivated to point on to the harsh truth and realise the things you can take control of to create that positive change.

5. You can develop self-awareness at ANY time.

Definitely not a one time deal, you can still juggle with your tasks and develop self-awareness. After all, it’s all in the head.

6. By being aware, you can change everything that needs to be changed for the better.

Now that we have these points, let us all take the time to look at this painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder:

Pieter Bruegel the Elder.

Anything odd about this painting? Did you spot it? Or were you captivated by the beautiful landscape view? It was a beautiful sight indeed, but one thing. Everyone was interested in themselves too much, that they were unaware of Icarus drowning. A growing selfishness and sense of individualism among mankind showing that no one has the time to think and worry about other people’s problem.

The last point I would like to make from the interpretation is, it’s always important to take a step back and reflect on the bigger picture. And you will see that missing puzzle that needs your help. By being self-aware, you will be able to acknowledge that you are worth more than you think you are, you are there for a bigger and better purpose. It’s a problem you can solve to become better.
