Brunei holds the potential of becoming a significant supplier in the global hydrogen supply chain in the future. Advanced Hydrogen Energy Chain Association for Technology Department (AHEAD) show this fact on the seminar of the utilisation of hydrogen for energy generation.

Brunei seeks the opportunities offered by the hydrogen industry, including those for the future development. Hydrogen is widely viewed as an energy source of the future since it is pollutant-free, clean and sustainable.

This potential is along with the construction of a hydrogenation plant at Sungai Liang Industrial Park (SPARK), part of a world-first global hydrogen supply chain demonstration plant, will begin next month. Preparation work for the plant has already been done in March.

The hydrogen plant project at SPARK signifies the longstanding strong bilateral ties between Brunei and Japan, not only in the traditional Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) trade but also in new technology development in the oil and gas sector.

The plant is scheduled to be commissioned by the end of 2019 and become operational in 2020, just in time for the 2020 Japan Olympics (to fuel cars at the event). At this point, the plant will begin producing hydrogen from Brunei LNG-processed natural gas and transform it into liquid organic form (methylcyclohexane or MCH) using their patented technology.

The liquefied hydrogen will then be transported on land using ISO tank containers to Muara Port for shipping to Japan for use in electricity generation.
