PT Gesits Technologies Indo (GTI) is a subsidiary company of State-owned company PT. Wijaya Karya (WIKA) that initiate to manufacture as much as 50,000 electric motorcycles throughout 2018.
Earlier this week on Monday, August 24 2018, the President Director Tumiyana conveyed that it would launch the model next month, September 2018.
The electric motorcycle itself would be called Gesist that stands for Garansindo Electric Scooter ITS. The nex plan would be to produce approximately 100,000 to 150,000 electric motorcycles in the country.
As for the performance of the motorcycles, they would be equipped with 5 kilowatt that makes the motorcycles to run for 80 until 100 kilometers in a single use. To charge the battery, around 1,5 until 3 hours are required.
GESITS has passed the test in 2016 where during the trial, the motorcycles were required to take a 1,200 km ride from Jakarta to Bali. Developed by student groups of Sepuluh November Institute of Technology (ITS), Surabaya, Indonesia, the project is now under the full responsibility of Garansindo Group.
Whether Indonesia is ready to have its electric motorcycles remains a question. Other than the performance, the government of Indonesia should carefully observe the supporting needs before the units operate on the road, such as the legal framework and public socialization of the product as this innovation is considered novel in the country.
Moreover, it is crucial for Garansindo to widely publish the mechanism and maintenance of its electric motorcycles as the level of education, traffic awareness, and road traffic safety consciousness in Indonesia are not evenly spread.
