Two neighbouring countries, Malaysia and Indonesia share the similar characteristics from culinary, arts, language, etc. Although the list of similarities between the two countries can go on, it is a different case for the hijab trends.
Chief of Merchandiser and Buyer HIJUP, Hanna Faridl observed both hijab trends. She said, “Malaysian hijabers tend to choose plain satin fabrics while Indonesians love patterns”. In terms of the shape, Indonesian hijabers prefer to wear the square-shaped hijab instead of long shawl like Malaysians choose to wear.
Another different point to spot is the colour preferences. It is very common to find Malaysian hijabs with daring color choices both for their hijab and clothes, definitely the preferences which would be less likely to be found in Indonesia.
Hanna also pointed out, since Indonesia love detailed finishing on fabrics, hijabs with laser cut details are still flooding the market. The love for details can also be found in the way the sellers improve and innovate the packaging.
In Malaysia, hijabers usually match their hijab choices with baju kurung—a traditional Malay dress. Even though this kind of dress gains familiarity among Indonesian hijabers too, but nowadays women would prefer to wear a long tunic, dresses, and khimar.
