Soompi, an English online media providing complete coverage of Korean pop culture, wrote that "IDOL" is described as based on South African dance style, and it features a mix of the traditional and modern.
The song includes a trap groove rap that’s backed up by EDM, as well as the rhythm of Korean traditional instruments and exclamations that are a part of pansori, a Korean form of musical storytelling that goes back to the Joseon Dynasty.
If I must say anything, as I first listening to the song, "IDOL" could very well be an official song for World Cup, especially due to the repetitive whistle-like sound in the background.
The lyrics are talking about how BTS' members are going to love themselves regardless on everyone's opinion on them. This might be a poke at people who now give them attention and try to label and define them, when at their debut time, people were putting them down, causing them to be insecure about their dreams as musicians.
BTS' is known for a relatable and socially-conscious lyrics, "IDOL" is another song that proves it.
Another good thing about "IDOL" is that the song will have alternative version featuring Nicki Minaj. It will be available digitally, but not featured in the physical album.
BTS is scheduled for a world tour, which they'll open with concerts in Seoul on August 25 and 26. The world tour also include a sold-out stadium concert in New York, making BTS the first ever Korean artist to perform a solo concert at a stadium in the United States.
