A new day has finally come for Malaysia as the fastest Internet access speed is on its way. This project is put in place with the 5G platform in Southeast Asia via the Enhanced Malaysia International Internet Gateway (EM-IIG) High-Speed Broadband is on its way. It will be done with installation of the world’s largest optical fibre of a 110,000 kilometre line.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail stated that Alcatel Submarine Networks will install a 7,500 kilometre submarine optical fibre from the internet hub in Hong Kong to Malaysia. Then, it will be extended to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam as well as the Philippines.
The first phase of the project was expected to be ready in November, with the Internet line linking Pengerang, Johor, to Putrajaya. It has been said that this project, which valued about RM 5.45 billion, is expected to be ready in 2022. The EM-IIG, which involved the installation of optical fibre of 150 terabytes, would offer high speed internet access of up to 1 gigabit per second.
According to cable.co.uk, Malaysia considered to be unsatisfactory and was ranked 48th with an average Internet speed of only 3 megabits per second. Therefore, the EM-IIG will be made available at low prices parallel to the government’s preparation towards towards the Industrial Revolution 4.0. It would assist the growth of new high-tech industries besides generating the economy to raise the country to developed-union status.
As a social responsibility initiative, a free high-speed Internet service will be provided to all government schools, hospitals and health clinics, as well as public universities nationwide.
In addition to this, the project will not only benefit people in Malaysia, but also subscribers around the world when the cable is connected to the outside world.
