Why Is Going Green So Hard?

The polar ice is melting. The forests are burning. The temperature is rising.

Is there really nothing we can do about it? We often feel bad about not being able to embrace the “green” lifestyle. Why is it so hard to just stop using plastic bags and ride bikes to work?

1. We’re going against the system

One of the main challenges is the system around us: consumers, industry, government, etc. The massive modern system work with so much plastic, so much pollution-emitting vehicles and machines, so much non-renewable energy and so much heat. When you order takeout, you can’t request for a biodegradable plastic bag or reusable food container

2. It’s really, really exhausting

In order to use less plastic, it is recommended that you bring your own container, water bottle, shopping bags and utensils. That leaves you with no choice but to bring a bulky bag instead of a cute mini purse. On top of that, you have to constantly remind the waiter to put the food in your own container, instead of a plastic one they use. Automatically, we also get weird stares or sour face from the waiters because you’re somewhat adding to their job.

A simple afternoon stroll could require so much effort. And for what anyway? That brings us to number three.

3. We can’t see the impact

After all the effort and weird stares, the news is still flooding with climate change. People around us still use so much plastic that if one person–that is us–stop using it, the amount of plastic waste is still rising. It is as if we don’t make a difference, but to complicate our routines.

4. Chased by time

Even if we want to embrace a greener lifestyle, more often than not we just simply don’t have the time for it. We don’t have time to rush back to our house and get a reusable canvas bag. We don’t have time to cook our own meals or to buy them ourselves and ask the waiter to put it in our bamboo container. We’re just hungry and we need to order via delivery which means we cannot ask them to bring it in an eco-friendly way.

5. We’re afraid

Believe it or not, we may just be afraid of how bad our environment has become right now. How we’ve messed up. Remember the stories about how people do mistakes and run away from it? Also the stories about people who, for example, keep drinking to wash the problems away and found out that the problems just got bigger and drink again to escape?

Well, that’s us with the climate change issue. We’ve messed up big time. We use too much plastic, ride too many cars, burn too many trees, throw too much non-biodegradable trash.

Now the ‘eternal’ ice is melting, animals dying, temperatures burning, even breathing is toxic. All that is because our environment is consuming too much toxic and harm from the humans living in it, thus it starts to give back toxic. Then we just keep using plastic, ride in cushioned car seats and clear the forests. Just like the alcoholic.

We understand that going green is simply… hard. But imagining our children living in poor air conditions, burning hot under the sun, and scraping out whatever resources are left for them is even… harder.
